The Ph.D. program in Business Information Technology (BIT) within the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech is seeking applicants for several fully funded Ph.D. student positions for Fall 2022. Full PhD Scholarship at Coventry University: "Technology-Enabled Monitoring, Privacy and Datafication of Home Working in the UK". Coventry University is inviting applications from suitably-qualified graduates for a fully-funded PhD studentship within the Centre for Business in Society.

Applications from UK/International/EU students are welcome. The PhD student will study the impact of technology-enabled monitoring for home workers in the UK. The project will be located within the Data, Organizations and Society.

This project will explore how homeworkers’ experience technology-enabled workplace monitoring and the data that employers gather for this purpose. The interface between workplace monitoring and working practices will be investigated, to understand the positive and negative consequences for trust within the workplace, homeworkers’ wellbeing, privacy and vulnerability. Workers in different roles, sectors and at different levels of seniority will be studied. As well as contributing theoretically, the project will provide policy and practice implications on appropriate technology-enabled workplace monitoring and the protection of workers’ information rights.

PhD in IT Positions Available: Infrastructure Health Projects

 There are several vacancies for Ph.D. positions in Information Technology for their NSF and DoD funded research project focused on bridge infrastructure health. The positions are for a fixed-term period of 2 years with the possibility of a 3rd funded year. The PhD graduates have excellent placement in both corporate and academic institutions around the USA.

Using rural Nebraska bridges as full-scale "testbed", we are conducting research and development relating to data collection at the edge using internet of things, including sensors, UAVs and more; secure data processing and management from the edge to the cloud; simulations visualizations and analytics of data using Machine Learning; sociotechnical impacts (perceived fairness of AI systems); and decision support systems.

 QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES

• Applicants must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in computer science, informatics, information systems, information technology, or a related field.
• Applicants must have some background in at least one of the following areas: optimization, visualization, cybersecurity, AI/ML, and/or data analytics/science.
• Applicants must be interested in research and development and be curious and motivated.
• Experience in conducting research demonstrated via a thesis (undergraduate or graduate), research publications in conferences or journals, or other similar activities will be positive.
• A good command of the English language (both written and oral) is an advantage.
• Applicants must be able to work independently and demonstrate good collaboration skills.

There are two openings for new PhD students with Prof. Gondy Leroy in the MIS department at the University of Arizona. The student will work on projects involving natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) and the research is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health. Most research will be in the context of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) project. We focus on machine learning algorithms to label electronic health records (EHR) of children at high risk for autism. Both traditional and deep learning, potentially leveraging each other, will be developed, and evaluated. In addition, we also focus on the EHR free text and identify phenotypic behavioral expressions of diagnostic criteria. Rule-based NLP will be combined with machine learning NLP. For all algorithms, we will systematically track transparency, bias, quality, and quantity of information in EHR and its effects on performance and human decision-making. The final technology is intended to be used as a human-in-the-loop decision tool and will be developed using rapid prototyping in interaction with domain experts. It will be evaluated in a user study with representative clinicians.
